County Fence: Automation Specialist

Automation Specialist (Volunteer Position)
The County Fence · Remote or Delta County, CO · 10–20 hrs/week

This will eventually be a paid position, but we are pre-revenue right now. See our roadmap for more details.

About Us
The County Fence is a community-powered publication and forum built on the principles of free speech, personal autonomy, and local resilience. We are grassroots, mission-driven, and building digital infrastructure for a healthier, more connected community.

About the Role
We’re seeking an Automation Specialist to help local businesses, governments, and nonprofits import their existing data into The County Fence. You’ll be designing and maintaining systems that onboard new members with ease and accuracy—via Google Calendar syncs, website scrapes, spreadsheet parsing, Facebook imports, and more. You’ll also play a key role in evolving the platform itself through thoughtful feature development.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain automation tools for importing external data into The County Fence
  • Work closely with the Business Ambassador to support new user onboarding
  • Prioritize automation work using the 80/20 principle—focus on tools with broadest impact
  • Contribute to platform improvement via our bug/feature backlog or personal initiatives
  • Document your work and communicate progress transparently to the rest of the team
  • Help shape an open, focused, curious, and accountable engineering culture

Tech Stack
Discourse (open source)

  • Ruby on Rails
  • Ember.js / GlimmerJS
  • PostgreSQL
  • Bash, APIs, and basic web scraping techniques
  • Cloudflare Workers in JS, Go, whatever you want
  • Cloudflare AI Workers

How We Work
We are a small, focused, values-aligned team. Decision-making is open and collaborative: we believe the best ideas come from engaging the collective intelligence and intuition of the team. We prize transparency, minimalism, and personal responsibility in communication.

This is also a space for growth. We aim to become the best versions of ourselves—technically, creatively, and personally. We encourage curiosity, self-mastery, and play.

Ideal Candidate

  • Familiar with the above tech, or highly motivated to learn
  • Comfortable writing clean, maintainable code and working in a team
  • Strong intuition for workflows, automation, and user onboarding
  • Aligned with our values of autonomy, transparency, and community empowerment
  • Self-directed but collaborative—willing to experiment, document, and improve
  • Comfortable with client onboarding - the Business Ambassador will hand the client off to you for technical matters, but will still be available if you need anything

Other Details

  • Volunteer basis for now (6–12 month timeline to revenues, see roadmap)
  • Remote or in-person in Delta County, CO
  • Documentation, mentorship, and a strong internal support system are provided
