Creating a video call

When you create a post, look for the video icon in the top bar.

When you click the video button, you’ll be presented with two options: Room ID and Button Label.

Both are optional. The room ID is like the “address” of your chat room which will allow other people to join. The button label is the text that will display in your post on The Fence to invite people to the call.

A couple things to note:

  • Combine this with the Calendar Event feature to tell people when you want to have your call.
  • Jitsi looks for at least 1 person to be logged on. If you’re the leader of this event, that could be you!
  • There’s no security here, anyone with the link can join your call.
  • With more than 10 participants performance may start to get bad. We’re using this service for free, but there are limits.

For call leaders who prefer to use Zoom (or anything else) just paste the link to your call into your post. You don’t have to use Jitsi.

Why use Jitsi?

  • It works straight out of the browser - no other software needed
  • No login needed
  • It’s open source software - at some point The County Fence may host our own Jitsi instance so that we are not subject to being disconnected by any third parties

Overall we hope this can be a low barrier way for people to have a call, while still allowing you to use other methods if you choose.

Here’s an example video chat. Probably no one is there. Maybe you’ll meet new friends? Good luck!
