FEATURE: Should The Fence require real names?

Real names might be nice because it brings us a bit closer to face-to-face. But made up names gives a bit more anonymity. I could go either way on this.

What do you all think the consequences would be, and which do you prefer?

This is a tough question.

On one hand, I value being able to have annonymity. On the other hand, perhaps people would tend to be more respectful because of more accountability.

One advantage to a psydonym, is if you are standing up to government you could take a controversial position and not see repercussions due to an oppressive government. Which I think we are seeing the first signs of lately.

I don’t have an answer, I am curious what others think.

Yeah. I think there will always be a place for anonymity. There are definitely cases where you may fear repercussions for saying something that is both true, and necessary (perhaps to warn people or prevent harm).

But imagine the cultural difference:

  • Scenario A: 90% of people are anonymous, no connection to their in person identity.
  • Scenario B: If I meet you on The Fence, then you’re the same person at the coffee shop.

B in my opinion feels more trusting and welcoming. And I would say probably my top priority question is “How do we create the best culture?”

I am for anonymity. Use real name if you like. I met a Delta activist who has been harassed by the powers that for merely collecting documents. He has not published any yet nor used any of his evidence. Sad to hear.
