We are now at countyfence.org!

I’ve relocated the site to countyfence.org. I was originally planning to create different subdomains as we spread into other counties, but I realized:

  • It’s just more to type
  • It’s going to cause a hiccup every time I have to set up the whole site again for each new county
  • Counties are an arbitrary boundary which people pass over, trade and interact between all the time

So instead I will be working on some features to tag content with location more granularly. I’ll probably do something like:

zip code → county → state

I hope this makes the site easier to find and use and also makes our growth path smoother. Best wishes to everyone!

As always, contributions are welcome. Please see Getting Started for ideas!

You designed this from scratch? It’s Delta only? I know it’s a bit late, but could you have come up with a template system? One can knock canned set-ups but for situations like this it saves a lot of typing…

I started with open source forum software - Discourse - as my base. I made the logo and the color theme (haha, not my specialty but I did my best). And I continue to work on features.

Right now my top 3 priorities are:

  1. automating calendar imports from some of the other community calendars so we can have the information in one place
  2. building location based features in anticipation of spreading out of the North Fork
  3. building advertising placement and metrics

What kind of template system are you thinking Lez?

There are different sections of the site like:

  • Stories (where we are now)
  • Events
  • Exchange

I can customize the interface for posting to each of these. So for Exchange for instance, I’d like to add fields that help determine: Is this a job posting? Or a sofa? Or you’re advertising your handyman skills?

Is that something like what you’re thinking? Or do you mean something else?

Right now I’m a one man band and also responsible for marketing and growing the platform. I’m very open to collaboration if you see an area where you’d like to help out.
